They say you should never judge a book by its cover. Whether we’re talking people, animals… or actual books— oftentimes, you’ll find a surprise inside. Outward appearances aren’t the best indicator of what someone’s been through.

Sadly, in BenBen’s case, this kitty’s expression pretty much said it all.

No one knew what BenBen had been through, but it was pretty clear he’d had a terrible past. The sad ginger cat had been brought to a shelter, and he was in a horrifically bad shape.

When he arrived at the shelter he was rife with injuries. The poor cat had a crushed spine, painful lacerations, excess skin on his face (assumed to be from some kind of attack), and a severe case of cauliflower ear.

BenBen was so depressed he refused to move or eat. He was in such bad condition that the shelter planned to euthanize him. Vets said he’d never walk again.

Luckily, an animal-loving couple caught wind of BenBen’s story and stepped in to save the day.

Sandy is an employee at an ER vet clinic, and when she and her boyfriend Adam came across the pitiful BenBen, they knew they had to help.

“We decided to adopt him because we believe everyone deserves a chance,” Sandy told Huffington Post UK. “He was so broken and sick and didn’t look like he’d ever been loved.”

“His face melted our hearts, and we knew we had to take a chance on him.”

“We managed to get everything sorted out the day before his scheduled euthanization and brought him to his forever home.”

From the minute BenBen was introduced to his new family, the sad cat underwent a stunning transformation. “He was instantly full of purrs, smiles, and ‘thank you’ cuddles”— and despite vets’ predictions, the (formerly) sad cat even started to play around and run!

“He can walk and run, although with a very noticeable wobble,” Adam told Daily Mail UK.

“But for a cat that was never supposed to be able to walk after going through what he went through, he’s doing amazing! He can even jump!”

“I like to think he knew he was safe and had his forever home.”

Since being adopted, BenBen has become quite the online celeb. His Instagram page boasts 168,000 followers, and his humans are using the attention to help other rescue cats just like him!

Sandy and Adam even set up a GoFundMe to raise funds towards helping these kitties in need. Although the campaign is now over, the pair succeeded in raising over $14,000 for the cause.

BenBen’s life could have been very different if two kindhearted, loving people hadn’t stepped in to help.
