Sometimes, rescuing stray cats and dogs isn’t always an easy task. Some of these animals have been abused by their owners in the past and are simply scared of any human approaching, even if it’s with good intentions.

This senior dog was left behind and completely alone on the streets. After a while, she made her way to a small area of a large port in Los Angeles.

The poor pup was injured, in constant fear and seemed confused.

Luckily, Al Ritch, a kind man who works at the port, noticed her roaming around. He was able to make sure that the pup – later named Oolu – was in a safe and secure area until animal rescuers showed up.

Al already noticed that Oolu was noticeably timid, and he figured it was best to call for back-up. He immediately got in touch with the Hope for Paws rescue organization, who has plenty of experience dealing with tough and tricky animal rescue situations.

One of the animal volunteers filmed the entire operation, and you can see that they’re approaching her one step at a time.

It seemed as if Oolu didn’t want to be rescued, but the rescuers quickly gained her trust.

They slowly approached her with a piece of a cheeseburger in hand, and it turns out that Oolu more than appreciated the food they brought along.

You can definitely see that she hadn’t eaten in a while, and it quickly made the poor four-footer feel a lot more comfortable around the rescuers and new human buddies.

All of them, including Al who found her, then stayed around for a while to make sure that she was feeling familiar with everyone. After, they took one of their leashes to bring the pup back to the car. At their animal center, they could then take care of her and treat her injuries.

Funnily enough, the rescuers actually managed to get a nice view of the city as well! Al invited them to soak in the views on one of the port’s high cranes, and the rescuers were definitely excited for their little impromptu field trip.

The kind man then escorted Oolu and her rescuers back to the car.

Al also explained to the rescuers how the pup got the name Oolu. It turns out the explanation is fairly simple! ‘OOLU’ is a common prefix for a number of shipping containers, and the pup was roaming around in the ‘OOLU area’ of the port. The cool and unique name stuck around.

Luckily, Oolu’s injuries weren’t that severe, although she was definitely in need of help. A warm bath did wonders for her dirty fur. She did suffer from a number of infections on her skin, but she only needed a couple of days of recovery thanks to medication.

After the rescue, the San Diego non-profit Lionel’s Legacy decided to take her in for a while, until someone would offer Oolu a forever home.

Even though Oolu definitely enjoyed her stay at Lionel’s Legacy, it didn’t take long before someone was interested in adopting her.

Oolu went from being abandoned and helpless to having a happy and loving family in just a couple of weeks of time. The rescuers mention that ever since her rescue – even though she was reluctant at first – her playful and energetic personality has really shined.
