Cats are funny creatures. So fierce and independent.

But there is a saying we all might remember from when we were young. Did anyone ever call you a scaredy-cat? Why is there even a term “scaredy-cat?”

Well, cats may be tough, but scare them and well, they turn into scaredy cats. And the way they suddenly arch and fly through the air is hysterical.

Since we all need a laugh or 50 these days, here are 50 times cats were scared.

1. “I’m Losing it”

How bored were/are you with your coronavirus lockdown situation? Are you doing crazy stuff to keep yourself amused and terrifying your pets in the process?

2. Ben hates the typewriter

What is this new old thing you have brought into the house. Let me investigate. Oh! I don’t like that clackity clack sound.

3. Sneak attack

Kids are the same no matter what the species. Look at mom she’s so quiet and peaceful. Let’s go change that.

4. Terrorized by popcorn

Have you ever walked into the kitchen not realizing somebody who started popcorn and being scared by it when it starts to pop? Then you understand this cat’s reaction.

5. Who are you?

I’m sorry. You do not belong here. That is one extremely aggressive cat. I wonder if he went after the other stuffed cats after taking out the first.

6. What scared him?

I’d be interested in knowing what scared the cat. But I love the different reactions. She just pulls the cover up, but of course he was the one that got the cat right in the face.

7. Hiccoughs?

Cat looks like it has a serious case of the hiccoughs. But dad seems to be doing something to make the cat jump.

8. The wonders of gravity

Pole dancing gone wrong. Or some sort of gym routine. But that poor cat has itself in a bad situation that just gets worse. But it sure is funny to watch.

9. Ka-Pow

That was one of the best back-hand slaps I’ve ever seen. Not that I’ve seen many, and certainly none handed out by a cat.

10. The wonder of magnets

Woah! What just happened here? I was just batting these things around and some unexplainable force snapped them together.

11. Those nightmares

Most of us can probably relate to this. Getting scared right out of a nightmare and jerking awake. But we aren’t as rubbery as cats and often end up throwing a neck or back out when we do it.

12. Meow

The real life cat has a face to match the not so real one. It’s funny how cats are so terrified of replicas of themselves.

13. Forever startled

Okay, this cat isn’t really scared. But how would we know when it is, since it will have that scaredy cat face forever?

14. Frightened kitten

Look at it’s paws! Is that normal? I know puppies can have giant paws they need to grow into, but I didn’t know the same was true with cats.

15. Drunk selfie

Sure, you’re drunk and want to take a pic with your beloved pet. But it has other ideas, since it seems to be scared to death. Maybe her breath?

16. The sneeze

This poor cat. Just minding his own business, and probably up to no good, when somebody sneezes behind him.

What was that explosion of noise? This is the cat’s reaction when it heard its owner sneeze for the first time.

We tend to think that cats really don’t care about us. But apparently if you disappear on them they will come looking for you.

This makes me think of somebody tickling my feet. And I would have pretty much the same reaction if it happened.

That poor cat had a plan. A sneak attack was in the works, but things did not go quite as it expected.

There must be something truly frightening about these cupcake wrappers. Or at least that one single wrapper, because that cat is petrified of it.

22. Sneaky dog

This is absolutely priceless. But it would have been even better if the dog managed to land in the bed instead of overshooting it as the cat flew out.

Just standing there minding his own business, and then boom. That little devil appears out of nowhere and scares him straight into the air.

24. The baby kicked

This cat has been sitting on its mommy’s tummy. Mommy is pregnant, and the baby just kicked and scared the cat.

25. You were watching?

First, I’d love to know what that cat is sitting there staring at. Second, its reaction when it realizes it’s being watched is hysterical.

26. That face

I hate having my picture taken. I also hate people taking video of me. So I completely understand this cat’s reaction as it pulls back in horror when it notices the camera pointed at them.

27. Unamused

You have been warned. This is my death stare. Pull on my tail one more time and pay the price.

28. That scary ball

That is a gorgeous snow leopard. And I’ve watched this about 100 times and I’m still trying to figure out what it is about the ball that scares him. Or was he scared? perhaps he was just excited.

29. It’s alive!

Hey guys, check this thing out. I love how they all jump back In sync, and then stand there and look at each other before taking off.

30. Spooked by mom

This cat shouldn’t feel too bad. Walking in on someone who has a mask on their face can be frightening for any one of us.

31. Incoming!

Good reflexes there. That little one would have sat right on that cat if it hadn’t jumped out of the way in time.

32. Pee-yew!

Someone’s stinky laundry has been sitting on the floor too long. And it seems that it’s so stinky that even the cat is offended by it.

33. The shadow knows

What do you do when you’re attacked by a shadow? If you’re this cat you just jump and try to get away.

34. Shrimp

Okay. This would freak me out too. But it’s actually kind of funny that a feline would be so frightened by a sea creature. And a little shrimp at that.

35. The toe and the cloud

This is a pretty big cat, and it seems he can fly. Or at least float like a big fluffy cloud when something scares him.

36. Kitty crossing

This is so cute. Those two scared the life out of each other, coming around the corner and seeing the other. They were not expecting that.

37. I got this

When you’re the king of the jungle a waterfall has nothing on you, right? Well this big cat thought so, but he was clearly wrong.

38. What the…

What did we just see happen? Did that cat jump through a screen to chase after that other cat who dared to be in his neighborhood?

39. Frightening fingers

Those must be some powerful fingers. That poor cat seems to think that they can zap him with lightning.

40. Scary pillow

Poor thing. minding his own business, while playing in that box when a pillow with a cat face creeps up behind. And he clearly was not expecting it.

41. Faceoff

That kitten faces his foe and is ready to do battle. Until he changes his mind and jumps straight in the air.

42. Pop, pop!

I was expecting it to jump up or back. But it just looked at those balloons in incomprehension an tried again.

43. Let’s investigate

Ooh, a bag of catnip. Must check this out. But you can see by the way it tentatively creeps up it might be suspecting the bag was occupied.

44. Ninja mode activated

I’m not sure this kitty has been startled. I think it just saw a foe and immediately went into attack mode.

45. What big Big teeth you have

I think I’ll just stay here and meet that horse. Actually, those teeth look pretty big. I’m outta here!

46. Synchronized

Okay, at first all I could see was the floor behind them, and I was appalled wondering what they did. It’s a rug.

47. Farm cats

These two cats live on a farm so you would think they would be used to things bigger and scarier than they are. I wonder what they saw?

48. Let me show you…

Someone thought they would sprinkle some love on their kitty. In the form of rose petals, it looks like. Yeah, that didn’t go as planned.

49. Ghosts?

Is it seeing them? Or is it the ghost as it flees the room in a cloud of white? Or maybe it just knows trouble is coming for destroying precious toilet paper.

50. What happened to the window?

Do you think that window washer is enjoying every minute of that? And you have to wonder what kind of destruction the cat did to the window covering.
