Birds are beautiful and majestic creatures. They come in all sort of incredible, vivid colors in so many shapes and sizes. However, they are also mysterious and hard to capture through photographs since they’re always on the move or in flight.
The Bird Photographer of the Year competition began in 2015, and entries began to flood in. Categories in the competition include ‘Best Portrait,’ ‘Birds in Flight,’ ‘Bird Behavior,’ and even ‘Young Bird Photographer,’ which is a category for photographers under the age of 16.
We found 50 of the best entries, and, of course, the winner of this year’s Bird Photographer of the Year competition.
The beauty captured in these photos is absolutely incredible.
This bird is peeking his face beneath his beautifully detailed wing. It must have taken a lot of patience to get a shot like that. His reflection on the water is even more magnificent.
A photographer somehow managed to capture this tiny bird’s attempt at flight. Learning to fly is a complex but necessary process, and this little guy looks so adorable trying it out.
The photographer titled this photo, and it is so fitting. These two really seem to be battling it out, and only one can win. You can really see the anger in the bird’s eye.

It turns out that human moms aren’t the only ones who chauffeur their kids around. Bird moms are stuck with this task, too. But they might be more successful at it.
43) Young Photographer Award
This was the 2017 winner for the Young Photographer Award. This is a stellar photo, especially considering a kid or young teen took it. Just look at that outstanding focus.
These two are fighting on the top of the water, and it is such a sight to behold. The photographer has expertly captured every detail of their skirmish, from the battle-ready claws to the splashing water.
This bird looks so majestic against the vivid sunset background. The photograph received Honorable Mention in the Bird Behavior category.
This little bird is so small compared to the apples he is standing on. These fruit will feel like a feast!
This is a rare opportunity: seeing a swan’s face underwater. This bird dived down for a bite, stretching out his super long neck to reach the bottom.
